When configuring your network, bridges, and taps you want your default Ethernet card to have the same static ip address as the bridge you create in /etc/network/interfaces. Doing so you will have internet access on the host and guest systems. Within the guest system configure the interfaces to be one numerical value higher in order to avoid conflict with the host.

On most all Ethernet hubs you can connection the WAN cable to any port. The same goes for your LAN cables. The hub almost always will automatically make the distinction between your LAN and WAN connections successfully providing internet access to your attached computers. Doesn’t everyone have a use for an eight (8) port hub?

I’ve experience problems backing up my web server, via scp, over my wireless connection. To resolve this I simply connected my computer via ethernet, rather than wireless. It seems that the wireless was causing the scp to stall whereas via a direct ethernet connection everything goes smoothly.

Recent downtime, of this server, has been extremely frustrating. Whats even more frustrating is that there is no apparent root cause. Each time the server went down, I simply rebooted and it would work again. There doesn’t seem to be a software problem, so I was jiggling the ethernet cables a bit, and stability seemed to increase.
Overall, for webmaster on the internet dealing with server downtime issues, sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Just jiggle your ethernet cables every once in a while
