Linux Server (LAMP) Versus Windows Server

Posted on by nseidm1.
Categories: LAMP, Linux Distros, Server, Windows.

LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, Mysql, and PHP. Linux is the operating system, and is equivalent to Microsoft Windows. Apache is a web server that broadcasts websites on the internet. Mysql is a database back-end used for storing information to support dynamic websites. PHP is a software language that is homogeneous with html/xhtml, and allows for dynamic website functionality. All of this can be achieved on Windows.

Windows is only a GRAPHICAL system, therefore you need all the software that comes with the default Windows installation. All of this desktop software requires a huge amount of computing power and memory (ram). Windows requires spyware software, and anti-virus software running fulltime!!!!

Linux requires no spyware removal software. Linux requires minimal anti-virus software. LINUX REQUIRES NO GRAPHICAL DESKTOP. Because of this Linux requires extremely less computer power, and memory (ram), to function completely as a full featured web-server :) !!!! :) !!!! :) !!!! :)

Wine Versus a VirtualBox OS

Posted on August 28, 2007 by nseidm1.
Categories: Linux Distros, virtualbox, wine.

Wine is an implementation, of core Windows components, on Linux. It allows the native running, of certain Windows applications, on Linux. It is extremely limited to the more mainstream applications, and while it does indeed work perfectly for a wide variety of powerful windows programs, there are other Windows programs that require, for instance, the .net framework. Windows applications, that require additional components that are proprietary to the Windows platform, will not be able to run utilizing Wine. In such an instance your best course of action is to install Windows inside of a free VirtualBox OS.

A VirtualBox OS, with Windows Installed, is completely indistinguishable from a real Windows installation on an actual hard disk partition. I use such a setup for programs that require the Windows .net framework, and Windows Media Player :)

Windows Vista Extreme Speedup

The best way to increase the speed, of any computer that currently uses Windows Vista, is to switch to any of the free, Extremely powerful, Linux Operating Systems, or install Windows XP. You can visit DistroWatch to see an up-to-date list of new distributions coming out almost on a daily basis.

The most popular Debian Distribution is Ubuntu

The most popular Red Hat Distribution is Fedora

Debian is the root OS of many distributions, and I personally use it. It is extremely stable, and very powerful!!

Installation of any Linux Operating System will increase the speed of your computer. Take a Windows Vista Laptop or Desktop PC to the next level by deleting Windows, and Installing Linux. If you are not ready to install Linux, a great way to speed up a Windows Vista PC is to install Windows XP instead. Windows XP is rather stable, I have great experiences with it, and considering the increasingly powerful machines sold for use with Windows Vista, the installation of XP should produce a marked performance improvement. :)

Note that with use of VirtualBox you can install WIndows inside of Linux :)

Linux Spyware, Viruses, and Fragmentation

Posted on August 19, 2007 by nseidm1.
Categories: Linux Distros, fragmentation, spyware, viruses.

The beauty of Linux is that it doesn’t require any De-Fragmentation, such as with NTFS and Fat32 file system formats. In addition, the swarm of viruses on the internet are predominantly written for Microsoft Windows based computer Operating Systems, therefore, for all practical purposes, any computer that is running a Linux distribution can be considered immune to the vast majority of threatening viruses. The situation is practically the same for spyware, although browser software is the same from OS to OS, therefore the Firefox Web Browser is recommended to minimize potential spyware headaches.

Thus by avoiding Spyware, Viruses, and the need for occasional Defragmentation, your operating system can perform at full speed.

The Beauty of Linux Versus Windows as a Server

Posted on August 18, 2007 by nseidm1.
Categories: Apache, Linux Distros, Server, Windows.

Windows is primarily a graphical OS, and as a result is relatively memory hungry. Linux does indeed have power, and also can be memory hungry, but can be fully configured otherwise. Server editions of Linux distributions significantly reduce the amount of computing power, and memory, that a system requires to be fully functional. While for for first time users the Linux command line may appear slightly intimidating, there are very few commands that are necessary to get a system cookin. For instance, a default Ubuntu Feisty Server Edition install, with LAMP, requires the addition of only a few lines to the apache2.conf file to configure several parameters; basically setting up the root directory as the software by default listens on port 80 out-of-the-box. Then the user can simply add html files to the directory that was set in the configuration file, and bam a new website is born.

Yes, Windows is easy. Yes Windows is graphical. Yes Windows is powerful, but no there isn’t a LITE version of Windows. Windows is a powerful Animal, while Linux can be configured as a LEAN athlete. The very webserver, that presents you this website, runs on 256 megabytes of ram, and a 900 Megahertz processor. 256 Megabytes and Windows XP don’t mix very well :)

Linux Distro Talk

Posted on May 7, 2007 by nseidm1.
Categories: Linux Distros.

I personally feel that linux is really really close to being a prime time competitior to Windows. There are clearly several linux ditros that are extremely well maintained!! The ones that really stand out are:

Ubuntu

Open Suse, which is mananaged by Novell

Fedora Core 6, which will become Fedora 7

Freespire, which is based on the popular Lindows

Knoppix

Gentoo

There are many moreLinux distros being maintained:

And a review website of popular linux distros:

Soooo many to chose from such little time. One thing I clearly notice is the incredible simplicity of the Ubuntu installer; it stands out substantially in my opinion!
