VirtualBox Manager/Pro Enhancements

As I refine VirtualBox Manager I find new enhancements to make. Various graphical enhancements have been made to both the free and pro versions. Android uses the Toast class to display an unobtrusive message on the screen. Utilizing this to display confirmation dialogs assures the user that a particular action has completed successful. It adds a sense of feedback to the application.

One feature removed was the disabling of auto correction on the input menus. Since domain names, usernames, and passwords do not require auto correction, I wanted to disabled the feature. But the ability to disable the feature was not available in Android 1.6 therefore the feature is not currently available in the current packages. As more phones shift toward >2.1 I will re-enabled the feature and push the update to the Marketplace.

The entire application is much more stable after some recent updates. If the password is correct, and the private and public keys match then there is only one reason the system will not login; signal strength. I have noticed it does not work with 1X and only works where there is a reasonably strong 3G connection. I will try figure out how to program a timeout that publishes a notification that the connection failed due to signal strength.

More updates to come. I also want to implement a robust server management tool that reads for common processes using ps, and give the user the ability to see if they are running, restart, or shut them down. ect…. I may integrate this into VirtualBox Manager pro or just as a standalone application.

IM+ – Instant Messaging All the Time

If you want to stay connected, via your favorite instant messenger application, then IM+ is what you want. Its pricey because their servers support a stay connected IM push feature. You can actually log off the application on your phone, and the servers will push you an email of the instant message. Since the Blackberry supports push email the communication can be almost seamless. Once you get the IM you can fireup your IM+ application and start typing in real time. I have experienced good things with the application. The push feature works flawlessly, but there is one gripe.

If you have a kings battery, or two batteries for that matter, and want to keep IM+ running at all times there are some problems. I find that the various clients do not stay connected. They eventually disconnect, especially Facebook. Therefore I recommend to only have your IM+ application running in the background for only relatively short periods of time. When you know you don’t need it pop it on IM push mode and your good to go for up to 3 days.

Cell Phones – The Best of Both Worlds – Blackberry, iPhone, etc…

The best of both worlds is not achievable. Your Blackberry is the ultimate communications device. The messages folder consolidates all email, SMS, MMS, and instant message communications into a single icon. The instant messaging feature further consolidates AIM, MSN Messenger, Blackberry Messenger, and countless other services. The messages folder also accecpts facebook notifications, and makes it seamless to conversate back and forth indepentent of the communications platform.

The iPhone on the other hand is the ultimate applications device. It is as close as it gets to a MID (Mobile Internet Device) without having a full blown version of Windows XP. There are countless application in the iPhone apps store, providing every function ever wanted. Games, media, ect…. the iPhone is unparalleled. Maybe the Motorola Droid will give the iPhone a run for its money, but it is still the iPhone. It is Apples telephone. How can you compete with that?

Google does indeed have its own operating system, and applications store. made fairly popular with the various Android based cellphone, their version of the appstore has many applications. It is indeed a noticable competitor to Apple’s appstore, and it is tempting to see what all the hype is about. I think the new Droid coming out should be very interesting, but once again there is no cellphone that will have the best of both worlds.

Even Blackberry has an appworld now. There are many applications that are suited very nicely for the storm. And with the new 5.0 software upgrade, which is outstanding, the Storm has been even more appealing. Overall the communications abilities of Blackberrys are unparalleled. The applications on the iPhone are unparalleled. And no existing, or soon to exist phone will have the best of both worlds.
