Grandparents – Religion – Science

Microwave Backround RadiationI was talking with my “enlightened” 96 year old grandfather today and he said one of the most profound things I have ever heard. We were discussiong the age of the universe, how its measured, and the nature of objectivity. A rational progression leads to the conclusion that humanity, and life in general is the sum of chemical reactions, and technically our thought processes are not even close to objective. I said the bold statement “technically we are nothing but the sum of chemical reactions”, and my grandfather said “no no no”. Thinking that he would come back with some sort of religious statement, I was cringing, but to my surprise he said “what we are is something, and how we came about is amazing”. For a 96 year old human being to understand science, rationality, objectivity, all in context to religion is amazing. He is truly an enlightened person that considers humanity special, while understanding that there is no way to prove that we are special. He is rational. As an agnostic scientist I am completely fascinated with the statement he made.
