XBOX 360 Fix Loud-Screeching Disk Drive Noise
Inside the XBOX 360 is a poorly designed DVD drive manufactured by Hitachi. If you experience a loud screeching noise, which can potentially destroy your video games, I recommend not using the XBOX until you fix the problem. The problem that is occurring is within the DVD drive and can be fixed. You can obviously contact XBOX (1800-4my-xbox) and they will most likely fix it for free; they will send you a box, you ship it to them, they fix it, and you will get your XBOX back maybe in two [2] MONTHS. Frankly I prefer to fix this myself. To fix this simple problem you will have to open your XBOX. This will require some tinkering. You will need a very small flat head screwdriver, and a set of allan keys. First you have to open the case. Take the flat head and pry off the front faceplate; which is designed to be EASILY removed. Then you have to remove the side, dark grey, panels. There are tabs that hold it in place, which you can insert the screwdriver in the side holes to pop the clips out of place. There are six clips on each panel. You can now open the front by placing the flat head screwdriver under the clips, lift them, and lift the front of the XBOX cover. On the back of the case is the remaining seven [7] small, very small, holes that provide access to the clips. Place the small flat head into the holes, and apply substantial pressure to release the clip. This can be quite a tedious process as you will indeed observe; but after some diligence you will succeed! Once the bottom of the case is completely removed you will notice that the top of the XBOX case is actually screwed to the main system. You will need allan keys to remove the screws. You may actually get away will a properly sized flat head if you cannot get your hands on allan keys. Remove the silver screws, then remove the top of the system. By removing the silver screws you mostly likely have freed the DVD drive, otherwise remove any remaining screws that are holding the DVD drive in place. Proceed to unplug the DVD drive connections, and remove the drive from the XBOX. There are 6 screws in the DVD drive. Remove all 6 screws. Remove both the top and bottom parts to the case. Heres the easy part.
The cause of the scratching noise is LOOSE MAGNETS. This is some simple problem, with such a simple solution. You will notice when you remove the top part of the DVD drive case that magnets are attached to it. These magnets are supposed to be in the center of the black colored DVD spindle; the place where you actually put the game disk. Take the magnets off the top of the case, and place a small amount of Gorilla glue, or super glue, or apoxy, on the magnets and re-insert then into the center of the black spindle. Let the glue dry then simply put your system back together in the same order that it was taken apart. BAM! A working XBOX 360 Again

I did it and it works, well half works. No more grinding noise when i put the disk in. No more griding while it’s playing. But when i hit the eject button and the disk slows down to come out it grinds. i don’t wanna take it apart again. And pop the magnet back out, and put more glue. UUGGHH!

Okay some of you might have a small update with it. The magnet on top MIGHT be WHITE colored so…i can’t seem to get it out but i know its the magnet. So if you don’t see a magnet thats it right there. Otherwise, I can’t help

My Grinding Disk Drive suddenly stopped before i took it apart, and instead now the disk drive wont stay closed, even when i turn the system off, Im looking to just buy a new disk drive,is this neccesary? and if so, wich disk drive is the best to find??

i took apart my xbox and dvd drive but there were no magnets and it still makes the loud scratching noise and the dvd drive doesnt stay closed when i shut it.

No magnets… still grinds. Something inside must be coming off balance because my disks are being heavily scratched. With the drive apart, I don’t see anything that would be the cause of these scratches.

Is the spindle the black thing in the middle that spins? I just need to confirm that before I take a look at it again.

Yes, the magnets are glued to the center.

ok. this hunk of scrap metal i got (my xbox 360) has that same grinding noise that some other people seem to be having, but i did notice that its the worm gear that is making the noise, it wont back the eye up and in attempting to make it go farther than its supposed to go, so. If anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem pleas let me know before i put my foot through this piece of shit. BS SOAD645

I tried this and couldnt get the 7 small back clips apart, just suceeded in mashing the clips to pieces, also beware of the sharp edges on the metal case inside, Ive ended up with several paper cut type lesions on my hands. Once opened I found the magnets to be secure and nothing else obvious although some swarf around the worm drive so possibly had been slipping. Thankyou for the guide though as I probably wouldnt have opened it up otherwise, and least I know I tried it.

I had the problem as described and followed the directions and IT WORKS!!! I was so excited when I was putting it back together because I knew I had fixed it. Thanks so much – you saved me $99 and a life-long hatred of Microsoft (for now).

i actually broke the black thing in an ameatur attempt in trying to hot swap any ideas
February 15, 2010 - 8:33 pm
I ended up breaking the thing on the top of the drive. It’s pretty much plastic, but for some reason my drive doesn’t read anything, hence why I was trying to fix it. I’m pretty pissed off at the fact that I have to fix something I paid over 300 dollars for, and then when their garbage system breaks they want another 99 bucks to fix it. Did I mention that I already had to send one back before? Unbelievable.

thank you very much

i took my xbox 360 apart and when you open the disk drive itself if you still have the original drive youll see that theres a gray circle get a flat head and pop it off and just take the small top thats magnetic (although it looks plastic) and put it ontop of the spinhead after you have your game in WARNING unless you glue it back the way it will fall off if you put it all back together
